Spike, of course (because, again, it's a TV show and this is a beloved character that we as an audience are expected to love and continue to love), is horrified by his actions. She cries and screams and claws at him to stop, to no avail until she manages to kick him across the room. Spike, almost calm and rational, quiet as though he's genuinely trying to reason with her, repeatedly pleads with an injured and therefore powered-down Buffy to let him love her, that he wants to 'make her feel it.' He knocks her down, bashing her already hurt back against the tub, pulling down the curtain. Longer in feeling than in time, honestly, but still long, a fullВ minute. He attempts to appeal to her, and when she says no (repeatedly) and pushes him away, he attacks. She tells him she could never trust him enough to love him. In 'Seeing Red,' Spike goes to Buffy searching for forgiveness after having sex with Anya. This is the case with Jaime Lannister, and this is most definitely the case with Spike on Buffy. Because,В as that man is a permanent fixture of the show, the writers want us to still love the character. This is often as a rock-bottom moment leading to personal betterment. It's as though the show wants us to believe that, given how frustrated he is, he has no choice but to attack a woman. In many cases, it is the act of a desperate man just trying to get close to the woman he loves and lashing out. The implication here is that within the show, and as such, within life, rape is explicable, understandable,В and even up for debate. From Julie's (Amy Jo Johnson) rape on Felicity at the hands of Zach (Devon Gummersall), an embarrassed virgin, to Jaime LannisterВ (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) attempting to rape CerseiВ (Lena Headey) next to their son's dead body on Game of Thrones, a both-sides narrative is often constructed. The other lacks a succinct phrase to describe it but is also damaging and dangerous, with implications that echo across television and into real life, especially right now.Д¬ontent warning: this piece discusses rape and sexual assault, including a description of an attempted rape sequence.Д®pisodic television has a history of providing us the sympathetic rapist. One, of course, is the trope of BuryВ Your Gays, with this episode culminating in Tara's infamous death at the hands of Warren Mears. The episode features two moments designed to make fans feel rage or sadness or loss, and instead steeped us all in two of the worst tropes in genre and beyond. It's that good.One of the most brutal, controversial episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 'Seeing Red,' Episode 19 ofВ Season 6, has managed to become even more so with age. It can change the way you react to events in your life and the way you view things. This is so much more than a show about a girl who slays vampires. The writing is spectacular, perfectly capable of balancing comedy, drama, and horror in every episode. These are some of the best hours of television ever produced.

Some episodes are truly brilliant pieces of television, especially the gems directed by series creator Joss Whedon such as Becoming, The Wish, Hush, The Body, and The Gift. No episode is boring, in all 144 hours of the series there is something worth watching. The events of the show change them and mold them into new people all the time, that's how good the writing is. Unlike other shows, the characters on Buffy are never the same from season to season. Seeing these characters change and grow over the course of the episodes is a gift. Every episode is layered with meanings and insights into humanity, all in some show about a girl who slays vampires. There are moments of happiness, drama, tears, and moments that make you rediscover who you are, and Buffy deals with all of them. No other show touches on the major issues of humanity this show does: immortality and it's pros and cons, the power of love and friendship, the inner strength we all have within us, and the ability to appreciate life and learn to laugh at the things that get you down. But having seen all 7 seasons of this brilliant series, I feel quite confident in my opinion. People that have never seen the show, or have only seen one episode of it, would probably laugh at that statement. Buffy is one of, if not THE, best dramatic series ever made.
